Sugar compound offers hope for diabetics – ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) | November 2, 2009

Australian researchers have discovered a natural compound in sugar that slows down the absorption of carbohydrates – which could help diabetics.

The team from the sugar industry’s Cooperative Research Centre at the Southern Cross University at Lismore and the University of Queensland made the discovery.

The Centre’s Chief Executive Peter Twine says the compound is naturally occurring and could be commercially available within a few years.

“People in a pre-diabetic sort of condition … don’t get large spikes of blood sugar immediately after eating food that contains this compound,” he said.

“The rate of absorption or glucose or sucrose is slowed.”
