Pulse – GPs ‘as good as specialists’, researchers claim | December 7, 2009

Reading the news item in Pulse that GPs are “well-equipped to care for patients with long-term conditions and do not achieve outcomes that are different from specialists, concludes an international analysis. The systematic review of 22 studies found a lack of evidence that specialist care resulted in better outcomes for patients with diabetes, arthritis and cystic fibrosis, when compared with generalist care. The Dutch study provides a much-needed boost for generalist skills after several high level attacks on the care that GPs provide.”

Seems that the study was on the Dutch care system, and that there was not a lot of data to go on, and also that while data was studies from 1987 to March 2008, that does not reflect current moves in the UK to push diabetes care into GP’s surgeries where in my view there is very little specialist knowledge of treating diabetes — especially type 1.
